network manager icon not showing

I've added the following line to my config
exec --no-startup-id /usr/bin/nm-applet
bar { position top status_command i3status tray_output primary }
but its not working on plasma+i3, while the nm-applet icon shows up on default i3 with the same config file.

also, some tray icons don't show up...
