I can think of two options:

Square-Cropped Thumbnails

Uncropped "Natural" Images

Square thumbnails feels a little more organized, but the natural images feel easier to browse based on size and layout/format.

I too like the organization of cropped thumbnails and can concur that having the option to switched to Uncropped (or vice versa) will make it easier for users.
