ive set everything up as instructed but after installing Network Manager i cant connect to any network, more specifically the raspberry pi says it cant find any wireless networks

After installing NetworkManager, you should be able to use NetworkManager (different icon) to connect to networks instead. If the installation is successful, the default "Wireless & Wired Network" tool used in Raspbian will not be functional.
If somehow the installation is unsuccessful, you can revert to the old setting by uninstalling NetworkManager: sudo apt purge network-manager
then sudo apt install dhcpcd5
