Sometimes it's necessary to draw a shape that isn't a link, say a region for anomaly planning, or boundaries for a scavenger hunt, or a even a field plan that you want to do some day but don't want to clog up the screen with red dashes.
There should be an option to turn off cross links temporarily. While that is turned on, the links and filled shapes should not influence the cross link calculation.
Perhaps think of it as a layer below the existing links, instead of above.
