Though http://buy.ioquake3.org does load correctly. So it seems to be an issue with SSL / port 443 or something.

Looked at this again, just documenting it so I can keep following the thread when I next have time to pick it back up: It looks like the issue is most likely with the SSL certificate for ioquake3 dot org which by my estimation doesn't like any subdomains. The current SSL certificate is set via LE layered through a service we use. I think at some point we have to stop using that service, for various reasons I don't want to go into on a public issue tracker, but that will involve a significant amount of work.

https://ioquake3.org/buy/ now functions as another solution. Sorry for the workaround! I still need to do the other work to get off the service.
