What happens when you index into a sharded (distributed) array

I have an array that is sharded across multiple hosts.

device_get fails, saying you can only get addressable data.

Yet I can access arbitrary indexes of this array (from any pod).

I'm assuming implicit comms happen.

How do I log/inspect exactly what comms are happening in my program?
