Hi there!

...Thanks for stopping by! I'm Joanna Florence and I live in Bedfordshire within the UK. Most days you can find me making something with the help of my assistant, my miniature dachshund Charlie.

I’ve always loved crafts and grew up enjoying knitting and cross-stitch. I bought my first sewing machine at the age of 17 (it was a mini John Lewis machine in bubblegum pink!) and I’ve been hooked on sewing ever since. I am largely self-taught, having learnt a lot through the wonderful online sewing community.

I taught myself to embroider throughout the first 2020 UK lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic. There is now nothing I find more therapeutic than sitting under a blanket on the sofa with an embroidery hoop.

On this website I post information about my latest sewing and embroidery makes, patterns, reviews, tutorials and more! For updates, follow my Instagram account @joannaflorencemakes

Not only is this 50's inspired vintage tea dress absolutely beautiful but the shirred waist and fluttery sleeves make it super comfortable and perfect for the summer.

The fabric used was from the sale at Pound Fabrics and is a lightweight polyester. It was easy and enjoyable to sew with (after I realised that some of my pins were ruining it so I stopped using them!).

The pattern was easy to follow although I found that there were a few small steps not included such as adding understitching to the neckline facing as well as how to neatly finish seams. I overlocked edges as I went and gave a rolled hem to the skirt for a nice finish.

I didn’t have to make any adjustments; the shirred waist makes it easy to get a flawless fit. However, I did add some hacks to this pattern. Firstly, I added some big pockets attached not only at the side seam, but also at the waist.

-

As the pattern calls for 60" fabric and the fabric I was using was 45" I also shortened the skirt length so I was able to still get a full circle skirt out of the fabric.

Overall, I absolutely loved making this pattern and it turned out great. I’ll definitely be making it again with some more lightweight fabric for a great vintage-feel summer dress.

The Joni pattern is by Tilly and the Buttons and features in the book Stretch!.

I am IN LOVE with this dress. It features a flattering empire waistline with a beautiful twist on the front as well as a full circle skirt. The pattern also comes with a choice of sleeves to choose from: three-quarter length, elbow-length, flared or even ruched.

I opted for the flared sleeves, although I didn’t make them as flared as suggested in the book. The book tells you how to create the pattern for the flared sleeves and in step 2 tells you to spread the pieces 10cm (4in) apart. I opted for 8cm instead and I love the amount of flare my sleeves have.

The fabric I used was is from Pound Fabrics and is a soft cotton jersey. At first it was a bit of a pain to sew with as my machine kept eating it but after attaching my walking foot it was easy.

I did get a bit stuck right at the end, when attaching my completed bodice piece to my completed skirt piece. All was fine until I tried it on and heard “snap!”… Actually I heard quite a few snaps! I was using a zig zag stitch and the thread just couldn’t take the stretch needed to get the dress on over my head and shoulders. I tried again after changing the settings and once again… “snap!”. I got upset at this point and decided it was best I take a break!

I turned to the sewing community on Instagram and got some great advice and encouragement. I had been using my sewing machine (not my overlocker) for the dress because I was a bit nervous that the overlocker wouldn’t like the elastic and it had only just come out of repair! I took the plunge and sewed together the bodice and skirt with the elastic on the overlocker… and it worked just fine! Sometimes you just have to go for it!

The fabric I used was quite stretchy and some good advice I got was that maybe I didn’t even need to use the elastic as I could easily get the dress on without it. However, it really depends on the stretch recovery of the fabric as for this it would need to be one that “pings” back easily and won’t lose it’s shape over multiple wears.

-

The pattern has great, easy-to-follow steps and I didn’t get stuck at all in knowing what to do. The twist is easier than it looks but if you do find yourself stuck on this pattern there are some great Youtube tutorials you can follow. I had a look just to check that I was doing the twist correctly (I need to stop doubting myself!).

The only downside to this pattern: no pockets. But I feel like you could easily hack those in. To be honest, I just forgot!

The dress fit me perfectly without having to make a single adjustment. It’s just beautiful and I want to swirl around in it forever! I now just need something to wear it to!

Yet another gorgeous dress by Tilly and the Buttons. This one features a relaxed waist with a button up front and shirt collar. The different options for sleeve length and dress length mean that this dress can be turned into an easy-to-wear summer dress just as easily as it can be turned into a toasty winter dress.

The options I went for were:

  1. The knee length variation.
  2. The short sleeve variation.
  3. The optional waist tie.

I accidentally cut the sleeves out at a length that was more 3/4 length than short sleeved. Although I could have chopped off a few inches to get down to the short sleeve length, I decided I quite liked the 3/4 length variation I’d created!

The fabric I used was kindly gifted to me by Minerva and is a beautifully soft 100% cotton that was a real pleasure to sew with. It basically glided through the machine and is perfect for Summer. I also lined the skirt was an old white bedsheet.

I’d never made a collar before but the instructions presented the instructions clearly with helpful images to follow along with. When I did get stuck I was able to refer to the Tilly and the Buttons website where there’s a whole blogpost on making a neat shirt collar from basics. The pattern also gave me a chance to practice sewing neatly alligned buttonholes, something I hadn’t done for a while either.

I took my time to make this dress and I think because of that it turned out to be the best item that I have made to date!

Happy New Year! 🌟

The beginning of a new year is a great time to reflect on how we’d like the next 365 days (or so) to go for ourselves; what we’d like to achieve and ways to reach these goals! I’ve decided this year to set myself a few sewing resolutions (reSEWlutions if you will!) so I can spend more time creating things that I love and getting the most out of my hobby!

1. Use fabric from my stash

I’m definitely not a hoarder but if there’s one thing I collect a lot of, it’s fabric. I have metres and metres of all types of fabric from poplin to satin, stretch velvet to French terry. There is absolutely no need for me to buying new fabric unless I have fully planned out a specific project and am at the point where I am ready to cut it out!

Benefits:

  • I will get lots of shelving space in my cupboard back.
  • I will save potentially hundreds of £££!
  • It’s more eco-friendly.

2. Take it slow

Once I’ve cut out a pattern and the fabric I tend to rush through the rest of the process. This year I’d like to take more time over things. I can imagine that this is probably a more enjoyable way of sewing, and in the long term this will probably lead to better made garments. Due to my busy lifestyle I’m also one who fits in 5 minutes of sewing around other tasks I have to do. I’d like to set aside time specifically for sewing so I can enjoy it stress-free for an hour or two, with a nice cup of tea and without having to think about anything else.

Benefits:

  • Better quality garments.
  • Less stress.
  • More enjoyment!

3. Plan out projects before starting

In 2021 I had projects that I spent hours on, that ended up un-wearable or in my scrap pile due to poor planning. Not only is it a waste of time and fabric when this happens but it’s extremely disappointing 😩. I’ve bought a bullet journal and have vowed to myself that before I start anything I’ll be drawing out diagrams, cutting out swatches and writing thoughts, ideas and things to remember throughout.

Benefits:

  • Less wasted fabric.
  • Less wasted time.
  • Better results.

4. Do a wardrobe audit

I’d love to fill some gaps in my wardrobe and make more garments that I’ll wear on a daily basis. For example, as I’m currently working from home I spend most of my life in comfy joggers and I definitely don’t have enough of them. At the other end of the spectrum, I have quite a few items that don’t fit me properly or I’m never going to wear again. I plan to donate these to charity, or give them a new life as clothes that I’ll wear. I already have some transformation plans and I can’t wait to bring my ideas to life!

Benefits:

  • More space in my wardrobe.
  • Sustainable sewing.

I think that’s enough for me! I wish you a happy and healthy 2022 💝 🎉

What are some of your sewing reSEWlutions? Below are a list that might spark some ideas for you!

  1. Cut into that expensive fabric that you’ve been saving forever!
  2. Regularly clean the insides of your sewing machine and/or overlocker.
  3. Organise your fabric stash by colour, fabric type or any other way that works for you.
  4. Get comfortable with a new type of fabric like satin or knits.
  5. If you’re used to sewing just one type of garment, try something compeltely different!
  6. De-stash if you have fabric or patterns that you think you’ll never use.
  7. Learn how to use a new sewing foot such as a rolled hem foot.
  8. Master a new technique such as sewing a zip fly or gathers.
  9. Tidy up your sewing room and organise everything beautifully.

This pattern is included in the Make it Simple Tilly and the Buttons book that I got for my birthday recently! I’ve never made a pair of trousers before (unless you count PJs) and due to the temperature getting warmer and the sun coming out I thought I should make some nice lightweight summer trousers.

The fabric used is a linen-cotton mix from Pound Fabrics and it’s absolutely perfect for lightweight summer clothes.

The trousers are incredibly simple to make and are comprised simply of a “front leg” and “back leg” pattern piece, with elastic pulling it all together at the waistband.

There were some extra instructions if you wanted to add pockets which were easy enough to follow. Saying that, I did have a couple of issues with finishing seams as I misinterpreted the first step to “overlock the side seams and outer edges of the 4 pockets”, leaving the curved pocket edge unfinished and then having to go back later and try and finish it whilst everything was already sewn together. At least I know now! If you really look at the picture closely you can see that all the edges of the pockets are finished, but it’s hard to tell this unless you really look, as it’s such a small picture with white stitches on white fabric.

After I’d finished, my elastic kept shifting around my waist which was very irritating and looked bad. The pattern suggests sewing a line of zig-zag stitches through the centre of the elastic if this happens but I didn’t want that to be visible all the way around. I opted for a couple of 2-3cm zig-zags on the left and right side of the back. This fixed the problem! Also, due to the elastic the pockets kind of awkwardly shift back but they are still very much usable.

I just have to add that this was my first time succeeding at pattern matching and I’m very proud of myself!

Overall, the trousers turned out great and I can see myself wearing them a lot this summer. They are super comfy as well as stylish and are just the kind of thing I needed for hot days working from home.

Overall, the trousers turned out great and I can see myself wearing them a lot this summer. They are super comfy as well as stylish and are just the kind of thing I needed for hot days working from home.

Shell tops aren't really my style but after watching the first episode of The Great British Sewing Bee, series 7, I felt inspired to make one myself. I was mainly intrigued by the “bagging out” technique for the facing which I had never tried and wanted to learn.

The pattern I used is free to download as a PDF and is a very similar shell top to the one used in the episode. It can be found on Sew Mag’s website here. In fact, I think this pattern is from a previous seris of The Sewing Bee!

The pattern is great for using up a left over bit of fabric as it only takes about a metre to a metre and a half, depending on the size you are making. I found a metre of this gorgeous peach crepe covered in royal blue foxes in my stash that I thought would look great as a shell top. This was just enough for me to cut out the top as well as the facings for the smallest size. Unfortunately, I went on to burn the facing with the iron (at least it wasn’t the top!) and subsequently had to cut out the facings in a plain white cotton. I think the contrast actually works quite well. I didn’t really think about how the fabric is very sheer so the facing is completely visible through it, but it works well with a white camisole underneath.

The pattern is simple and easy to follow. It describes the “bagging out” technique very well and I had no trouble creating a lovely neat finish using it. I had some trouble when I got to step 10 as I didn’t really understand how it was telling me to finish the back. So in classic Joanna style, I winged it. I sewed the facing to the back seams, right sides together and turned them back out so that the ribbon hoop was on the outside of the garment. I then sewed the back seam from the hem to the bottom of the facing, right sides together, as it says to do in the pattern.

I decided to take up the hem at the back a bit as the dramatic scooped back was a bit too much for me. It’s still curved on mine, but doesn’t dip as low. For finishing the hem, the pattern tells you to zig zag over the raw edge, then fold over and stitch… but this just wasn’t going to cut it for me. I think that would have looked a bit messy so I opted for a nice neat rolled hem.

Something I learnt whilst watching episode 2 of The Sewing Bee was that you can sew on buttons using a sewing machine (who’d have thought it?!) and I finished the garment the morning after episode 2 aired by using this technique. I’d previously sewn all buttons onto garments by hand, but this just looks so much neater and takes less than half the time!

When I showed off the finished garment to my boyfriend he called me out for not pattern matching - the cheek of it! There’s only so much you can do with a metre of fabric.

Overall, this is a great basic Summer top that has a lovely straightfoward pattern with some good diagrams. I would recommend it for confident beginners to learn techniques such as darts, bagging out and sewing a button loop with a button.

I absolutely love gothic-esque embroidery and I was inspired by the beautiful Mexican Day of the Dead sugar skulls to create this flowery skull pattern. I have stitched it in a 5" hoop on calico fabric but I also think it would look great on a tote bag, on a denim jacket, or as a patch.

You can download the pattern below. To fit the pattern in a 5" hoop make sure your printer does not scale the page, but feel free to scale if you would like the pattern to be smaller or larger.

Flowery Skull Pattern PDF Download

Stitches Used:

  1. Satin stitch
  2. Stem stitch
  3. French knots
  4. Lazy daisy
  5. Long and short stitch / threadpainting.
  6. Straight stitch
  7. Fishbone stitch

Colours needed: Black, dark pink, hot pink, pale pink, baby pink, yellow, light green, leaf green, yellow-green.

Step 1: The skull

  • Outline the skull, the teeth and the facial structure highlights using 1 strand of black thread and very small stem stitches.
  • Fill in the eye socket with 2 strands of black thread, horizontally in satin stitch.

Step 2: The vines

  • Complete the vines with 2 strands of light green using stem stitch. Add the leaves using lazy daisy stitches.
  • Fill in each lazy daisy stitch with one straight stitch using 2 strands of yellow-green.
  • Add the pink french knots using 6 strands of hot pink.

Step 3: The large flower

  • Work from the center outwards to produce the ombré effect on the petals. This flower uses four different pinks. Start with the lightest pink and work long and short stitches, using 1 strand, from the center to roughly a third of the height of each petal. To create a more natural feel the long and short stitches should not be precise.
  • Take the next shade of pink, overlap with the previous shade of pink and work further up to roughly half of the height of each petal.
  • Continue to work in this natural way with the next two pinks until the petal egde is reached.
  • Fill the center of the flower with french knots in 3 strands of yellow.
  • Use fishbone stitch to start filling the leaf, using 3 strands of leaf green. Once you reach the top of the petal, work in satin stitch down each side of the leaf around the petal to complete the leaf.

Step 4: The small flowers

  • Work again from the center outwards to proudce the ombré effect on the petals. These flowers just use the two lightest pink colours. Start with the lightest pink and work long and short stitches, using 1 strand, from the center to roughly half the height of the flower. To create a more natural feel the long and short stitches should not be precise.
  • Take the next shade of pink and overlap with the previous shade of pink to work to the petal edge.
  • Fill the center of each flower with french knots in 3 strands of yellow.
  • To complete the leaf on the lower flower, use fishbone stitch and 2 strands of light green.

You are welcome to use this pattern for your own personal use. This means you can stitch it in a hoop, add it to clothing or a tote bag, create a patch and gift it to a friend etc.

This pattern is Billie by Tilly and the Buttons and can be used to make a jumper as well as a jumper dress, with either regular or balloon sleeves. I chose to make the dress and chose the regular sleeve option!

I love this dress, it is so perfect and comfortable, just like I wanted! It a great ultimate work from home dress and looks much more professional than PJs! I love it paired with leggings for ultimate comfort. For a less casual look I pair this dress with tights and combat books as pictured. Did I mention it has pockets!? They’re a great size and fit my big phone in them! They don’t make the dress look super bulky like some other patterns do.

I’d recommend this pattern for confident beginners who are looking to get into sewing stretch fabrics for the first time, or to improve their abilities with stretch. I remember being terrified of sewing with stretch fabric before I started but you just have to go for it! There will be plenty of mistakes (trust me!) but it’s so worth it in the end. I love not having to worry so much about getting the fit 100% right like you have to do with woven fabric because stretch fabric is very forgiving.

This awesome constellation fabric was bought from Pound Fabrics and is a soft French Terry. Unfortunately, it’s sold out now. Fortunately, I bought 7 metres of it so I have plenty left over! I’m thinking of making some Stella jogging bottoms with the remnants.

I’m already planning my next Billie!

I've been wanting to try out a Tilly and the Buttons pattern for a while now. I’m constantly looking at their Instagram page, and loving how aesthetically pleasing it is! I love how they cater to all skill levels and I refer to their blog and Youtube channel frequently because of how clearly everything is explained.

I got the “Make it Simple” Tilly and the Buttons book for my birthday recently and immediately went through the book sticking post-it flags on the pages of the patterns I wanted to try first. Learning to properly sew with stretch fabrics has been a goal of mine for a while, so when I saw that the book had an easy T-shirt pattern I knew that I had to try it. T-shirts are an absolute wardrobe staple and because I’m working from home at the moment due to Covid, they are what I wear almost every day.

The pattern is made up of a front and back bodice that are cut on the fold, plus a neckband. The instructions are incredibly clear, with a picture at each step.

The book also shows you how you can customise your T-shirt further by adding cuffs or an iron-on design! This is something I’ll probably try soon!

The fabric used is from Pound Fabrics and is a plain black cotton jersey. The neckband used was cut from the main fabric of a secondhand top that didn’t fit me properly. The trickiest part of this pattern was adding in the neckband, which took 3 attempts. The neckband was such stretchy fabric so I had to keep chopping bits off of it to make it fit properly.

-I used an overlocker to complete all the seams.

Overall, a lovely and quick pattern. I’ve just ordered some more stretch fabric with this pattern in mind!

The Winslow Culottes are a beginner-friendly pattern by Helen’s Closet, featuring box pleats and an invisible zipper at the back. This is the first pattern that I’ve bought from Helen’s Closet and I have to say that I am super impressed. The pattern comes with four different length options. The one I chose to sew is view A (the shortest) but I’m definitely going to make some more in longer lengths.

The instructions were comprehensive, clear and beautifully formatted with excellent diagrams to follow. I had never printed and put together a large PDF pattern but it was easier than anticipated. I loved that the layers feature in Adobe Reader had been used so that there was an option to show just your size on the pattern pieces. This made cutting out the pattern after printing very clear and definitely helps to minimise mistakes.

The fabric used is from Pound Fabrics and is a lightweight polyester that I bought a while back with the idea of practicing pattern matching. I think I did okay… although I still don’t feel entirely confident and definitely need more practice! I’m not sure the tartan was a great choice for the pattern… They’re a bit too bold for me to wear and because of this I’m not sure that they’ll get worn much (at least out of the house!). I plan to make my next pair in some beautiful plain linen.

Hi there!

I'm Joanna, keen sewist and crafter! Most days you can find me making something with the help of my assistant, my miniature dachshund Charlie.

I’ve always loved crafts and grew up knitting and cross stitching. In 2020 I discovered the joy of sewing and I’ve been hooked ever since. I am largely self-taught, having learnt a lot through the wonderful online sewing community.

I absolutely LOVE this pattern. It’s The Amelia Tea Dress by Simple Sew… with a few hacks. Firstly, I added some big pockets and attached them in-seam at both the side seams and waist. Secondly, as I didn’t have enough fabric for the original pattern I shortened the skirt pattern piece so I was still able to cut out a full circle skirt.

Techniques I learnt in the process were:

  1. Darts.
  2. V-neckline with facing.
  3. Adding sleeves to a garment.
  4. A refresher on shirring.
  5. Matching seams up properly when putting in an invisble zipper.

It’s so comfortable and I can’t wait to wear it in Summer.

After that make, I decided I wanted to make Dave again, but with this super cute avocado fabric! I’d never made a soft toy before and I couldn’t be more pleased with how he turned out.

This is actually the first dress I’ve successfully completed without giving up halfway through! I’ve had some sort of mental block about dresses until now. I’ve made plenty of tops and skirts but a dress just seemed like an entirely more difficult thing.

The pattern used was New Look 6507 (view C… with the adition of a strap).

Techniques I learnt in the process were:

  1. French seams.
  2. Making bias binding.
  3. Tricks for sewing over big chunky seams.
  4. Narrow rolled hems.

Something I found frustrating was using the rolled hem presser foot. It’s definitely something I need a lot more practice with!

Yet another gorgeous dress by Tilly and the Buttons!

The variations I went for were:

  1. Knee length dress.
  2. 3/4 length sleeves.
  3. The optional waist tie.

The fabric I used was kindly gifted to me by Minerva.

I took my time to make this dress and I think because of that it turned out to be the best item that I have made to date!

When I saw this strawberry covered fabric I immediately thought about making a summery pinafore dress. Then when I saw this pattern for a pinafore dress with large pockets and a pocket on the front I knew I had to make it!

The pattern used was Kwik Sew K4318.

Techniques I learnt in the process were:

  1. Sewing a lapped zip.
  2. Turning corners neatly on an overlocker.
  3. Stitch in the ditch.
  4. A refresher on gathering.
  5. A refresher on using my machine to sew one-step buttonholes.

I also had a stark reminder not to grade seams too much or else things start falling apart!

I’ll definitely be making this dress again. Perhaps in a fabric where I can stitch some pretty embroidery on it.
