Help with simple config

I currently have

caps o n u e i
)

(deflayer base
@escmod _ _ _ _ _

(deflayer layer1
_ bspc left up down right
)

(defalias
	escmod (tap-hold 100 100 esc (layer-toggle layer1))
)

and from my understanding, that should just work, but it doesn't. It does run but doesn't produce my expected results

all the keys, when I hold caps for layer 1, just type normally except "u", which does left, which is even more confusing

I also have a thinkpad with a spanish keyboard (I think), but with a colemak layout in linux mint. Something in this stack might be a problem but I want to make sure that the config is right at least.
