What is the need of K3d-tools

What exactly k3d-tools mean and is it mandatory for k3d to run and if why it is mandatory.
Please help me with this query.

k3d-tools is a tiny container that contains helper programs to support k3d clusters and does e.g. the following:

• before starting the cluster (or nodes), it checks the Docker environment to evaluate environment-specific config options (e.g. the network gateway to reach the host system)
• supporting k3d image import (it takes care of saving the target image from the local docker-socket into a shared docker volume)
