This wiki serves as an accompaniment to The Undernet, a web-game prototype created as part of the Design and Technology program at Parson's school of Design. It aims to elaborate on the project as a guide, explain its motivations and conception, as well as its shortcomings. In other words, this is a soft research paper parading as both documentation and walk-through for a romantic-tech experiment.
The Undernet is a web game that requires user interaction with the developer tools in order to advance a narrative - a romantic encounter between two computer outcasts, Clippy the Office Assistant and the Internet Explorer.
The internet is a powerful and acessible open-source tool. My hypothesis is that despite how present the internet has become in our lives, the majority of people don't understand the extent of its functionality and usefulness, a lot of which is accessed through the 'developer' tools. 'The Undernet' suggests that these tools are not only useful for developers, and perhaps using them should become a more ubiquitous practice.
