Brief Summary

When text is selected, use the ⌘C keyboard shortcut to copy the selected text, the same as the context menu → “Copy” command. If no text is selected, ⌘C defaults to copy the password.

Context

I often have text in my Notes field that I need to copy, and often make the mistake of:

  1. Select text
  2. ⌘C
  3. Paste my password into a public place

Indeed, ⌘C is the keyboard shortcut for “Copy Password,” and the only way to copy selected text is to use the contextual menu → “Copy” command. However, habits are hard to change and it's a security risk to accidentally copy and paste my password instead of the less-secret text I indented to copy.

Using ⌘C for “Copy Password” as well as “Copy Selected Text” is a safe context change that fulfill expectations because it requires a text selection first before switching context.
