Link to original post for custom excerpts

Hi, I would like to have a more / read the rest link on custom excerpts, I followed the info on wordpress codex on how to allow them (adding a function to theme's functions.php) but it clashes with the one that the theme provides. How to allow it without breaking anything :-) ?
