Ongoing untracked files changes [was: Increased CPU usage for stage/commit operations]

Since a couple days ago magit blocks for around 30 seconds for simple operations like staging files or committing. I'm not sure how to debug this, how can I help diagnose this?

With my current setup: (nil "normal" nil nil "normal").
-> git config --local --unset status.showUntrackedFiles: (nil nil nil nil "normal")
-> git config --global --unset status.showUntrackedFiles: same
-> git config --system --unset status.showUntrackedFiles: same

And things are as fast as they used to be, after all this, even if you do not set the local status.showUntrackedFiles again, right?

I think you misremember that, I think before all this, the above form would have returned (nil "all" nil nil "normal").

The same form is used to determine the value in magit-insert-untracked-files, except that car is or not list. I.e.:

(or nil nil      nil nil "normal") => "normal" ;1
(or nil "normal" nil nil "normal") => "normal" ;2
(or nil "all"    nil nil "normal") => "all"    ;3

You think you went from 1 to 2, but I think it was actually from 3 to 2, because 1 and 2 both lead to the exact same end result, which isn't what you observed (after you went to 2, things got faster).

No.
Today I got in a state where there are thousands untracked files again and the only way to make the Magit buffer refresh usable was to set status.showUntrackedFiles = no. I guess I can live with that :/
