Does the color-relief layer only support dem data?

I want to load an arbitrary tile and replace the white in it with a transparent color. I don't know how to do this. Is this supported? Or does color-relief only support raster-dem sources?

I don't think color relief is the right solution.
You could use addProtocol though to achieve this.
