can marimo execute .py files?

I'm using jupyter notebook extension in vscode so that it executes selected code of a .py script as it was a .ipynb, so my notebooks are already a python executable scripts. When I execute marimo edit some_existing_script.py it tries to execute it as a script, but i want it to open it as a notebook.
So, is marimo capable of opening .py scripts? And moreover, can marino vscode extension execute selected code of .py scripts inside vscode (in interactive window)?

I not sure i follow. marimo edit some_existing_script.py does open it as a notebook

mmm, that's what i thought, but it always gives me an error instead of open it. see an example:
When trying to open this file mith merimo edit, among others, it gives me marimo._ast.codegen.MarimoFileError: ./scripts/trasnpile_sql.py missing attribute app.

When I try opening other files it throws other errors like it's trying to connect to a my local db (not set up). The thing is that it's like merimo is executing the file before opening the editor, and i'm just trying to open the IDE like a Jupyter notebook.

oh, sorry i see now, i read too fast. these scripts are not originally marimo files.

yes marimo would fail. but this would be nice to handle. i think we could support this either:

marimo convert other_script.py > nb.py

marimo edit other_script.py # prompt user to ask to convert

could you file a feature request for this?

in the meant time, you can do:

# copy the notebook to clopboard
cat other_script.py | pbcopy
# create a new notebook
marimo edit nb.py 

# paste in your clipboard to the notebook
