Data breakpoints

The EDBG document and the Python script give information on how to use the hardware breakpoints. But there is no information about how to employ them as watchpoints/data breakpoints. Is it possible to get this info for the basic functionality supported by GDB, i.e., read/write/access watchpoints?

A good observation. Unfortunately the AVR debug system has over the generations been pruned of such features, so for example data breakpoints are only present on the "megaOCD" variant, which pre-dates even the "EDBG" era.
