can you have the downloader put each separate post into its own subfolder?

i'm really glad i found this, because i haven't been able to find anything like it that mass downloads from sites like kemono.
that said, if i wanted to have it put the contents of each separate post into its own subfolder, is there a way to configure that? if so, how?
i've seen similar questions asked here, but i wasn't really sure how to make use of the answers given, partly because i don't really understand it lmao, but also because i'm not sure if that process would be the same for every site.

Of course, you simply have to set the "directory" setting to whatever you prefer.

This works exactly the same for every site in principle, the only difference is the name of the keywords used by a site, even if it's mostly the same. For example, an unique item ID is usually, well, {id}.

But different sites provide different metadata (like tags, etc.), and that is why they differ.

You can get all available keywords (and their values) from running gallery-dl --list-keywords <Your_URL_here>, and if the keyword representing the title of a post is called {title}, for example, simply add that into the list of strings for the "directory" option, e.g.

    "directory": ["{category}", "MyDownloads", "{title}"]

Check the "Configuration Files" line when running gallery-dl -v.
It'll show a list of all found and loaded config files.

$ gallery-dl -v
...
[gallery-dl][debug] Configuration Files ['${HOME}/.gallery-dl.conf']

When a config file is not at exactly one of the paths listed here, it won't get automatically loaded. Make sure your file wasn't accidentally named config.json.txt or similar.

edit: Run gallery-dl --config-create to have it create an empty config file at one of the correct, recognized locations.

yeah it did make it .json.txt lmao. i'll give it a shot later and report back.

so i changed the extension to be a proper json, and it IS being recognized now, but it's giving an error about it not being able to load the config correctly

which doesn't really make sense, it's the base directory. that's what it's called, and it's in quotes like it should be.

It's not just quotes, which are required for strings in JSON, it's also the backslash, which is the escape character.
So, either double the backslashes to actually get them ("base-directory": "E:\\kemono\\patreon"), or use forward slashes.

ahhh ok i see. i got it working now, however the folder it made for the creator is a string of numbers, likely the creator's user id on the given site, but is there any value that will use the creator's actual name instead of the number? if not, it's no big deal, i can just change the name of the folder after it's downloaded, but still. oh also, if some entries are skipped by the downloader, will running it again with the same URL skip entries it already sees are downloaded, or will it just try to redownload everything? cuz it seems kemono has some issues with the downloader, as every now and then it's throwing

it also seems like it's not downloading anything from links. the creator in question links their videos via mega in their posts. is there any way to get the downloader to grab those as well?
