"Error (ein): Server for user jefarr requires start, aborting"

I've got a local install of jupyter hub via The littlest jupyterhub which is working through the standard web UI, but when trying to connect with ein I'm hitting this error which appears to be fatal even though it's popping up in the Warnings buffer.

Steps to replicate:

M-x ein:login RETURN <hostname> RETURN <username> RETURN <password> RETURN
