It would be really nice if we had a way to create a user instantiable read/write stream buffer that is OS agnostic.
See #2500 (reply in thread) for a discussion of how clunky it is to try to write to a temp file right now.
For bonus points, it would be even better if these things had a handle or file descriptor and external processes could write to these streams as well.
This would solve the async event loop problem as well.
