Commit 49de6b2 from September 2018 introduced checking for PERL_LWP_SSL_VERIFY_HOSTNAME, HTTPS_CA_FILE and HTTPS_CA_DIR. However, as of July 2023 PERL_LWP_SSL_VERIFY_HOSTNAME no longer works. See details at "verify_hostname" here.
Right now the distributions are a mixed bag. Fedora <= 38 and the RHELs come with LWP::Protocol::https <= 6.10, while Fedora >= 39 provides 6.11 or later. A similar situation is brewing on the Debian side. To prevent breakage, apache_* would need to check for both the old and the new variable, with a line or two of added documentation to point people in the right direction.
