I might need to be editing a TON of YAML... how do I add a YAML mode?

You need to do two things:

1. Add yaml-mode to the list of packages here

2. Add a hook such that yaml-mode is started when you open a *.yaml file

    (add-to-list 'auto-mode-alist '("\\.yaml\\'" . yaml-mode))

As of now, there isn't a dedicated place for hooks, but as a part of an upcoming massive update, I'm planning to introduce one.
