To me this looks rather like a desktop manager integration/autostart issue that an app's fault. I advise to ask in Ubuntu forums.

I confirm that on a fully up-to-date Fedora 36, with GNOME Wayland desktop, I'm also missing the icon in the application status area.

See also #2217.
I have AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support installed and saw the icon until recently, but now the icon is missing in the notification area.

Hi @janvlug In which desktop environments and display server do you lack app status icons? Fine for me in KDE Plasma recent versions using Xorg on Arch.

This morning, when I resumed my computer from suspend, the icon was visible again.
@OlivierDoucet also stated that the icon sometimes appears after a few minutes, but in my case it was after that the computer was suspended and resumed again.
@nursoda I use GNOME desktop running Wayland on Fedora 36. Other app icons in the status bar (GNOME pomodoro extension, and Solaar) are correctly displayed all the time.

Hey I believe the Gnome desktop is pretty popular… even with the latest desktop client 3.9.0 the icon is not visible on Gnome 42.

This bug affect also Debian Bookworm (Gnome 43.1, nextcloud-desktop 3.7.3-1) but only on Wayland. When using Gnome on Xorg Nextcloud tray icon seems to work correctly whereas on Wayland nothing is visible nor accessible (no way to know if synchronisation is working correctly or not) while other tray icons (from other apps) are visible and working as expected.

The solution for me was to de-activate Tray Icons: Reloaded gnome extensions and to activate Ubuntu AppIndicators which is included in the gnome-shell-extension-appindicator Debian package.

The icon is now visible in the tray but that does not indicate the state of synchronisation: the only visible icon is the gray one, not the green, red or yellow ones).

@b3 I have exactly the same issue with Debian Bookworm on Wayland, but with Gnome 43.9 and nextcloud-desktop 3.10.2.

Also does not show for me on Raspberry Pi 5 OS which is Debian Bookworm based and using Wayland. Nextcloud version is 3.7.3-1
