This is a short task list for changing the plugin to use a Build Service to provide the Node.js/npm/yarn download/setup instead of the current task setup.

  • Download Node.js
  • Install Node.js
  • Detect pre-installed Node.js
    • Detect node on PATH
    • Detect node in common locations (e.g. nvm)
  • Cache found Node.js installations
  • Support short version numbers (e.g. 16.4 or 16)
  • Add support in tasks
    • NodeTask
    • NpmSetupTask
    • NpmTask

This has mostly stalled on account of gradle/gradle#17559, I'm hoping to make some progress by the end of the month though
