I don't know if this was considered, but links do work as item text.
I'm using link items to link to other mind maps to allow usage to be more three dimensional.
however, I'm not sure what the actual procedure for creating them in the interface is, i have to update the json file in the webdav directory.
If I try to create them in the interface it will keep the url part hidden and just update the text, and keep appending to the original hidden tag forever.
It seems like it's so close to being useful, I just had to pass this along.

The process of editing node contents is offloaded to your web browser's wysiwyg feature, AKA contenteditable. In other words, the browser is in control, we are not interfering with the process. You are free to copypaste rich data (from other app, from other webpage), as we are not providing any particular controls and/or UI.
There are some more/less obscure ways of interfacing with the wysiwyg, but you would still need some UI to do non-trivial stuff.
