OTLP doesn't publish metrics based of Traces

We are evaluating Open Telemetry and one thing I notice out of the box in comparison to datadog is that we don't seem to get any general metrics points related to traces generated.

Previously in datadog, when a trace was submitted it also generated metrics based off those traces. An example of this is a trace for an http request. We would also get metrics with the count of https requests recorded from the dd agent as well as some contextual data like the endpoint the request was made too and our additional tags/dimensions.

Is there a way to get similar functionality or does this require us to manually instrument the metrics when those traces are created?
