For someone who's looking for job opportunities and has contributed to many projects on GitHub, it makes sense to be able to use GitHub's profile section as a portfolio to showcase valuable contributions to open-source projects. Rather than writing my skill set in a
README.md
file, I want to show the recruiter what type of contributions and work I have done. There are multiple instances where the project maintainers appreciate your contribution, which acts as a testament to your skills. There are also complex bugs/problems/issues that you might have fixed, showcasing your expertise over your skills. Being able to pin these commits/comments can help me show a recruiter my work. These are just some examples of scenarios that can be used to impress a recruiter. It becomes much easier for a recruiter to find valuable insights into someone's work if these items could just be pinned on the profile page. Imagine 100+ reactions on a merged commit, or a core maintainer appreciating your fix for a hard problem in the project. If a recruiter could see it (without digging into the commit graph), it could immediately show the level of work a candidate can do.
I want GitHub to be my LinkedIn profile. A developer's journey cannot be molded into words but rather "see it yourself". When I say I "improved", say, X, it's easier to convince a recruiter when they can see "what" and "how" it was improved.
Badges are for kids, let me pin my work.
