I just started using the free Copilot that Github gave everyone a couple of days ago. Very nice tool!

It says free users are limited to 2000 completions and 50 chat messages per month. I understand why it's rate-limited for free users -- that's not my complaint.

For other features such as Codespaces and Actions where free users are limited, there is a section in my user settings "Access">"Billing and plans">"Plans and usage" that lists the free usage so far this month, and when the counters will reset. That has been extremely helpful in making sure I don't get blindsided when I reach the limit while I'm working.

However the section there for "Copilot" doesn't say how much this month I have used, it doesn't list how much Copilot resources I have used towards the limit. It would be extremely helpful for me to know this! Please add a usage bar for Copilot when the user is only using the free Copilot!

Hi @dragoncoder047 ,

With GitHub Copilot Free you get 2000 code completions/month. That's about 80 per working day. You also get 50 chat requests/month, as well as access to both GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet models.

If you hit these limits, ideally it's because Copilot is doing its job well, which is to help you do yours! If you find you need more Copilot, the paid Pro plan is unlimited and provides access to additional models like o1 and Gemini (coming in the new year).

So you're saying that GitHub deliberately left out the indicator so that people using the free plan can inadvertently run up to the limit, and then GitHub can shove an ad for Copilot Pro in their face? That doesn't seem very user friendly!

@Akash1134 That's a bad excuse for not giving customers insight into their usage data and is only going to lead to customer frustration and dissatisfaction. Also, your statement assumes that all your users use Copilot for their job (professional work), which is not true; many people use Copilot for education, research, charity, personal projects, etc. In many of these cases it might not make financial sense to use a paid account. Additionally, providing insight into usage data would allow users to consider the value add of this product to help inform their decision for upgrading. I feel like GitHub is thinking along the lines of "people that make six figures using our product can easily afford it", however that is a barrier to entry for people where that is not the case.

80 completions per day pass really fast. By example, if I have an array of 30 elements that needs to be mapped to SQL columns that have just been read, I get 30 autocompletions from Github Copilot for each line instead of 1 big autocompletion for mapping the entire array. I know some tools like Cursor that autocomplete once instead of line by line. I actually think 2000 autocompletions is not enough considering the competition that is in the market, like free Deepseek, ChatGPT, Claude 3.5, Cursor, Windsurf, especially for professional that use free-tier. In the other hand, the Paid Tier of GitHub Copilot seems the best for the buck actually for 10 US/Month.

The UX of a free-plan user hitting the limit and then considering to upgrade to Pro makes sense. But as a Pro user, I am pissed that the only way to know if my usage fits within the free plan is to cancel my subscription, have the poor experience of wondering why completions aren't working anymore, and then realizing that it's probably because I hit the limit. That would totally break me out of my flow. At that point, I will be unhappy against GitHub for forcing me to go through this poor UX, so instead of reactivating my subscription, I am likely to consider competing products.

I assume that every other Pro user is in the same boat. Do you really want every single Pro user to cancel their subscription, if only for a month? Come on, you already have the feature implemented for Business plans, it can't be that hard to make it available to Pro users.

I tried exactly that to see how much i need for my hobby coding. And it seems there is bug in counting the limit. Few weeks ago it said, my limit will renew on 19-1-2025. But when I tried it today, it says 19-2-2025.

Looks like the limit is reached forever 🤣

Interestingly enough I was having the exact opposite problem -- it maxed out and told me it would reset on February 19, but then it randomly decided it would reset today. Weird. At least fix this so it shows the right anniversary date please!!
