Anthropic Claude Opus 4.1 Now Available in GitHub Copilot!

We're thrilled to announce that Anthropic's latest and most advanced model, Claude Opus 4.1, is now available in public preview for GitHub Copilot users! This powerful successor to Claude Opus 4 brings enhanced capabilities to your development workflow, supporting extended thinking with tool use and logical summaries to help you solve complex coding challenges more efficiently.

Claude Opus 4.1 is available to Copilot Enterprise and Pro+ plans. (Effective September 16th)

You will be able to access the model in GitHub Copilot Chat on github.com, GitHub Mobile, VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, and Eclipse through the chat model picker (Agent, Ask, and Edit modes). If you do not yet have access, please continue to check back.

Enabling access

Copilot Enterprise administrators must opt in by enabling the new Claude Opus 4.1 policy in Copilot settings. Once enabled, users in that organization will see Claude Opus 4.1 in the model picker.

Who Gets Access?

Claude Opus 4.1 is available to Copilot Enterprise and Pro+ subscribers. You can start using this cutting-edge model today through GitHub Copilot Chat across multiple platforms:

• Visual Studio Code
• GitHub Mobile

For Copilot Enterprise Administrators

If you're a Copilot Enterprise administrator, you'll need to take action to enable access to these models for your organization:

1. Navigate to Copilot settings
2. Enable the new policy for Claude Opus 4.1
3. Verify availability by checking your individual Copilot settings
4. Confirm the policy is enabled for this specific model

Once enabled, your team will see the new model in the Copilot Chat model selector.

Dumb question, what is the benefit of using Opus models over Sonnet if it can't be used in Agent mode?

I had the same question, @raky291! But, according to this article from Anthropic: "Opus 4 pushes boundaries in coding, research, writing, and scientific discovery, while Sonnet 4 brings frontier performance to everyday use cases as an instant upgrade from Sonnet 3.7." 😉

Any idea if claude opus 4.1 will be available in agent mode eventually? Also it's been 24h and our admin still don't see the setting to enable claude opus 4.1 on our Enterprise plan anybody knows why?
