"All contributors" development stalled?

Summary

Just flagging that I just noticed that there's been no activity on any of the all-contrib repos for ~6 months (longer if you don't count the ML one...)
This is fine so long as it keeps working, but would be an issue if it stops working for whatever reason, and feels like something we should keep an eye on, and perhaps consider contributing upstream as we are quite reliant on that code as things stand.

What's going on with that repo, and is there any way I, or we at The Turing Way, can help?

Context:

• We're quite a heavy user of the bot, and the project aligns well with our prioirisiting of recognition of contributions beyond lines of code, and would like to see it continue being supported. (Further info)
• We have a (small but very cool) infrastructure working group who may well be able to assist on the technical side of things.

I, personally, would be very happy to be given permissions to triage the issues (it seems like a lot of spam has cropped up recently), if that would be a useful first step perhaps?

There's a discussion on TTW Slack about the option of hard forking this project.

@alexwlchan - @malvikasharan mentioned that you previously contributed to both TTW and all-contrib. Do you know anyone who might be able to help support/maintain the project, either within the current project or as a fork?

given the radio silence from upstream, at this point I think a hard fork would be appreciated (of course if there are a few people with some bandwidth to give to it)!

@da5nsy My only contribution to all-contrib was five years ago, and it's been a while since I had any bandwidth to do stuff for TTW – I don't know anybody who'd be able to support/maintain the project, sorry.

hey everyone. Just a note that I did email one of the maintainers that I had reached out to in the past. Similar to this thread, they haven't responded yet! i'm following along here however. it seems like a good move to try to revive the bot. I am unfortunately not a ruby dev.

Good thoughts! What would a manual update process look like? Currently, we use the bot by calling it on issues and PRs to add contributions.

Also, could it be valuable to cross-reference and hold this conversation in the all contribs repo so anyone looking at it might see it? That might be a way to gauge interest from others in that community / using that tool as well? Alternatively, we could open an issue there and link to this discussion as another pathway to gain more traction.

Perhaps we can all work together on rebooting the maintainer team for this tool? I've done this once before and am happy to do it again. I can work on docs once we figure out a path forward (if that is useful to everyone).

The CLI is quite user friendly, actually, I like to use it when adding multiple people at once as it avoids merge conflicts. There is a TUI you can use interactively,

$ npm install all-contributors-cli
$ npx all-contributors
? What do you want to do? (Use arrow keys)
❯ Add new contributor or edit contribution type 
  Re-generate the contributors list 
  Compare contributors from the repository with the credited ones

Or you can use commandsl ike

$ npx all-contributors add 
? What is the contributor's GitHub username?
