Automatic private registry authentication

Is there a way to specify a script to run that would authenticate to a private registry before bun installs packages? The goal would be to run "bun install" and somehow hook into a pre install event that could run something to authenticate with a private registry.

In the past you could add a "preinstall" script in your package.json but since npm 7 that functionality has been broken. See npm/cli#2660. See comments:

What I'm asking is something similar to pnpm's devPreinstall which seems to have been released to fix this type of issue. See comment 965887793 in pnpm/pnpm#3836. Unfortunately, this doesn't even work 100% well in pnpm due to pnpm/pnpm#5507
