# Learners
2+
3+
**Learners** are participants in [learning circles](../learning-circles/learning-circles-1.md). No matter your age, skills, or background—if you want to learn a new skill or topic with other people, you can be a learner!

## Why learning circles?
12+
13+
There's a lot of free knowledge available in the world, but it can be intimidating, lonely, or ineffective to work through new information on your own. We believe that learning with other people is the best way to gain a well-rounded perspective on a topic and remember what you've learned.
14+
15+
Learning circles help people find a supportive environment to learn about a topic they care about with like-minded members of their community.
16+
17+
Learning circles are:
18+
19+
* **Free** to join
20+
* **Adaptable** to your personal interests, needs, and priorities
21+
* **Effective** in supporting the completion of online courses
22+
* **Social** and collaborative to help people connect with their community
23+
24+
## Finding Available Learning Circles
25+
26+
You can see a list of learning circles open for sign-up using the [**learning circle search page**](https://www.p2pu.org/en/learning-circles/). Along with a list of available learning circles, there are tools to search by keywords \(ex. "job skills" or "coding"\) and filters to let you search by location, topics, and meeting days.
27+
28+

29+
30+
## Starting a Learning Circle
31+
32+
If there are no learning circles happening in your area, there are two ways that you can start one!
33+
34+
1. \*\*\*\*[**Facilitate a learning circle**](../facilitation/intro-to-facilitation/) yourself – this involves finding an online course you want to work through, picking a meeting space and time, and using P2PU's free tools to start a group
35+
2. Contact your local library to request they start a learning circle program

# Facilitators
9+
10+
> _As a facilitator, you're making learning easier. You're the dad, the grandma, the big sister, the cheerleader, the doctor, the psychologist, the mender, the builder, the tech geek. That's a tall order, a big job! At the same time while you're wearing all those hats, in these online times you have the extra challenge of maybe not seeing a face, maybe not hearing a voice, not being there in person to interpret the body language, or to fiddle with the tech. And you have to recognize that everyone is different, that some people are quiet, some people like to talk, some people are daring, some people are reticent, some people are sassy, some deferential. You have to draw out those who hold back, push back on those who take over, and smooth out the bumps. You're hosting the party and you want everyone to be comfortable and have a great time. The challenge is to build a group dynamic that facilitates, that makes it easy for everyone to meet their goal. All you really have to do is acknowledge that everyone has experience, everyone has a perspective, everyone has a story, and that means we can learn from anyone. With that philosophy in your pocket, the job gets much easier…_

Every [learning circle](../../learning-circles/learning-circles-1.md) has a facilitator. The facilitator does not have to be an expert in the subject, so with a little practice and training, anybody can facilitate.
15+
16+
Every learning circle has a facilitator: the person who decides to start the learning circle, who organizes meetings, and who encourages the atmosphere of peer-to-peer learning. Facilitators do not need to be experts or teachers the expertise comes from the online course and the community of learners.
17+
18+
Whether you want to run a single learning circle or organize dozens across a library system, we are here to help. If you are new to Peer 2 Peer University, start by watching our introductory video.

# Learning Circle Checklist
2+
3+
Here you will find a checklist that outlines the steps needed to get your learning circle running. You can compress or expand this timeline to suit your needs. However, if you don’t already have a dedicated group of learners, we recommend spending four weeks promoting your learning circle once you’ve finalized the date, time, course, and location.
4+
5+
## Before You Begin
6+
7+
* Discuss plans with the MCL Learning Circle Team\(?\) or Steph Miller, including
8+
* Intended audience and their potential learning objectives
9+
* [Library priorities](https://multcolib.org/about/priorities) and goals being supported
10+
* Course choice, number of sessions and length of each session
11+
* Dates & Times
12+
* Staff and/or volunteers involved, including who is Facilitator and Tech Moderator
13+
* Ensure Facilitator has been invited to MCL’s P2PU Team account
14+
* Ensure manager approval for time and involvement before moving forward
15+
16+
## 4 weeks prior
17+
18+
* Publish course online through MCL’s P2PU website & MCL’s Events page
19+
* Create Zoom meeting using [MCLTech account](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HikcHogfC5AadGGunMGbGGAoQz6IpmdBvIvnLnLfCAU/edit#heading=h.k37jvlm3c546)
20+
* Enter Topic = name of learning circle and staff involved
21+
* Enter When, Duration \(of each session\) and use Recurring meeting, when possible
22+
* Note: If the circle sessions don’t fit the pattern offered by Zoom, select the number of recurrences and you will be able to adjust these on the next page
23+
* Click Save
24+
* Click Show all occurrences to ensure all of the dates and times are correct or if they need to be edited
25+
* Add to your MCL Google Calendar
26+
* Copy the Invite Link for use with the P2PU portal
27+
* Create P2PU Course through [MCL’s P2PU portal](https://www.p2pu.org/multcolib/) - login and select Start a learning circle from the menu. Note: Your work will not be saved until Step 5 is completed. More information
28+
* Step 1: Select a course
29+
* If the course is already in the P2PU database, search for it and click Use This Course - if it’s not already in the P2PU database, click Add a Course in the right-hand panel
30+
* Step 2: Find a location
31+
* Follow [Tips for creating an online learning circle](https://community.p2pu.org/t/tips-for-creating-an-online-learning-circle/4462)
32+
* Step 3: Select Meeting Dates
33+
* Step 4: Customize \(info shared with patrons\)
34+
* Use the course title or adjust it
35+
* Welcome message = See “Adding the finishing touches” section for what to include
36+
* Copy in the course description and edit it to include information participants would want to know before signing up for the class \(i.e. objectives for course, info about quality/usefulness of course\)
37+
* Question = How did you hear about this learning circle?
38+
* Website = multcolib.org
39+
* Image = add a copyright-free image - [pixabay](https://pixabay.com/), [unsplash](https://unsplash.com/) and [wikimedia commons](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) are good options - if the image requires attribution, include it in the description.
40+
* Step 5: Finalize - Answer questions noted and click Publish - then you’ll want to immediately close the learning circle, in order to review your work and to set up local promotions first - here’s how:
41+
42+
1. Go to your [P2PU Dashboard](https://learningcircles.p2pu.org/en/)
43+
2. Under My Learning Circles, click Manage to the right of the course
44+
3. Click Close signup - we will reopen when ready to promote
45+
46+
* Review your Learning Circle listing
47+
48+
1. Go to Manage for your learning circle
49+
2. Click View webpage to review listing in P2PU
50+
* If you need to make a change, go back and click Edit to edit the learning circle listing.
51+
52+
* Create the Event Planner listing - send Steph Miller P2PU course link and original image link to create an event on the library’s website - this information and the Event Planner event link will also be used on MCL’s social media platforms and in MCL’s newsletters. Steph will share the Event Planner event link back for review and for using with additional promotion.
53+
* Reopen learning circle in P2PU site to promote
54+
* Promote program
55+
* Create a flyer for community partners and library locations - use an [MCL flyer template](https://commons.multcolib.org/marketing-online-engagement/flyers-templates-and-resources#Event%20flyer%20templates) or create your own, including details noted in the MCL flyer templates
56+
* Internal promotion - post on the Share Blog, send email to relevant google groups
57+
* External promotion - connect with local communities, publicize online and offline
58+
* Develop a facilitator's guide for yourself
59+
* Explore the online course and create a simple outline or detailed guide for your course
60+
* One may already exist and has been posted on the [P2PU Community Forum](https://community.p2pu.org/) that can be customized
61+
* MCL also has a [event outline for virtual events](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AaEyNbGdzeYEtHeADdVSJabIYzdENLhKmwIiTmx6_BE/edit#heading=h.4y8aw9w971cc) that includes helpful general tips and information for running virtual events
62+
63+
## 2 weeks prior
64+
65+
* Manage your learning circle
66+
* The P2PU website does not have a way to cap registrations, so you will want to keep an eye on registrations - an ideal number of participants is 5-12, but there will be folks who sign up who won’t be able to attend, so you’ll want to allow a higher number of sign ups.
67+
* You can close registrations from the Dashboard - here’s how:
68+
1. Go to your [P2PU Dashboard](https://learningcircles.p2pu.org/en/)
69+
2. Under My Learning Circles, click Manage to the right of the course
70+
3. Click Close signup
71+
* Practice with Zoom and decide on details
72+
* Schedule a Zoom practice session with your learning circle team to cover who is doing what, how information will be presented and to get comfortable with the Zoom controls
73+
* You may want to meet with your learning circle team between each session to reflect on the previous meeting and to adjust for the next meeting
74+
75+
## Before each learning circle meeting
76+
77+
* Communication with learners
78+
* The P2PU portal will automatically send the following emails to learners
79+
* Confirmation of registration
80+
* A reminder email 2 days before each meeting that allows the learner to RSVP and resends the circle Zoom link
81+
* Facilitator might need to send additional communication to learners - here’s how:
82+
83+
1. Go to your [P2PU Dashboard](https://learningcircles.p2pu.org/en/)
84+
2. Under My Learning Circles, click Manage to the right of the course
85+
3. Scroll down to the Messages section and either
86+
* click Edit to the right of the message you would like to update the automatic message that will be sent by the site
87+
* click New Message to send a new note to all learners
88+
89+
## After each learning circle meeting
90+
91+
* Capture feedback and communication with learners
92+
* Facilitators should complete this process after each meeting - this process will include communicating to learners about the meeting, sharing insights with the P2PU community and capturing stats
93+
* Go to your [P2PU Dashboard](https://learningcircles.p2pu.org/en/)
94+
* Under My Learning Circles, click Manage to the right of the course
95+
* To the right of each meeting, click Capture feedback - you will be asked to enter the following:
96+
* For learners: Write a brief summary of this week's learning circle - You may want to include your impressions of how it went, plus/delta feedback, and anything the group agreed on having completed before the next meeting. This will be automatically sent to learners two days before next week's meeting.
97+
* For the rest of us \(P2PU community\): Anything you want to share? - What went well this week? What surprised you? Any funny stories? We'll pull what you write here into our community newsletters and updates.
98+
* How many people attended? These stats will be captured for MCL’s event stats
99+
* Rating how the week's class went
100+
101+
## Final learning circle meeting
102+
103+
* Surveys
104+
* The P2PU portal will send emails to both the learners and facilitators before the final meetings, asking them to complete a survey about their experience
105+
* Ask learners to complete this survey during the final meeting during plus/delta
106+
* Facilitators should complete their survey immediately after the final session
107+
* The survey results \(called Insight Report\) will be shared with learners, facilitators and team organizers 2 days after the last meeting

# Organizers & Teams
2+
3+
P2PU offers additional tools and functionality for **organizers:** those who want to organize a **team** of learning circle facilitators in one or more locations. We work closely with organizers to ensure that new facilitators in their area have everything they need to run learning circles.
4+
5+

11+
12+
## What does an organizer look like?
13+
14+
**Organizers** are responsible for coordinating teams, which are networks of learning circles happening across a single city or region. Organizers work closely with P2PU to ensure that new facilitators in their area have everything they need to run learning circles, while also representing their hometown and contributing local insights as part of the P2PU community.
15+
16+
**Who else is an organizer, exactly?**
17+
18+
There are around twenty organizers so far \(with twenty teams!\) and we’re eager to keep this number growing. One of our first organizers was Kate Lapinski, the Learning & Economic Advancement at the Chicago Public Library. Kate has been training and supporting a large number of branches and librarians to run learning circles since learning circles started in 2015. Another well-known organizer is Juliana Muchai, Principal Resource Mobilization Officer for the Kenya National Library Service. Juliana has grown learning circles from a couple in Nairobi to being a regularly run program found in 15 public library branches across Kenya.
19+
20+
## Tools for Organizers
21+
22+
Organizers get set up with a custom set of software tools to help them coordinate learning circles. Teams are granted the following features and functionality:
23+
24+
* **A custom URL for your team** that features all your team’s active or upcoming learning circles in one place which you can share with anyone
25+
* **Weekly updates from your team of facilitators** that include the number of learner sign-ups from each learning circle, a weekly team schedule as well as a summary of facilitator feedback.
26+
* **Learning circle reports** that show insights from your aggregated reports over time
27+
28+
Additionally, there are non-technical supports for organizers found in this Forum which include [training resources 3](https://community.p2pu.org/tags/training) such as detailed agendas, slide decks, and videos; [promotional templates 2](https://community.p2pu.org/c/learning-circles/promotion-and-outreach) and [feedback and testimonials](https://community.p2pu.org/c/learning-circles/testimony) from other team organizers across the world.
