I am aware of an issue in Half Life Alyx where it requires the player to hold the thumb stick to move in order to get any Walk in Place movement to work.
This is not how the SteamVR binding system should work, and you should be able to remove the thumb stick binding completely but doesn't work in this game specifically. I opened a ticket with OpenVR ValveSoftware/openvr#1553

Ok got some great info from my ticket on OpenVR git. It is possible to get input in HLALYX just very unclear.
This is the binding you need to apply in the "Move" tab of ovrwip_controller binding. I also published the controller binding to the shared workshop, that should be available for ovrwip controllers. You also bind to left/right hand in "Extra settings" tab
