How to override config values for specific os + arch combos ?

I've been trying to set the MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET env var with different values depending on the target architecture. Here's what I tried (as of cibuildwheel 3.1.4)

[[tool.cibuildwheel.overrides]]
select = "*-macosx_*_x86_64*"
inherit.environment = "append"
environment = {MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET="13.0"}

[[tool.cibuildwheel.overrides]]
select = "*-macosx_*_arm64*"
inherit.environment = "append"
environment = {MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET="14.0"}

it seems however that both overrides are completely ignored and both builds fail with

...
Set the environment variable 'MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET=13.0' to update minimum supported macOS for this wheel.

are my selectors never matching anything ? Is my mental model of select matching the final wheel name incorrect ? Is there any other way to achieve the same thing without needing to repeat shared environment variables ?

Did you define the environment variable in your workflow file?

I, personally, use an entry like this:

[[tool.cibuildwheel.overrides]]
select = "*-macosx*arm64"
environment = { MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET="11.0"}

I made sure I didn't. I'm specifically trying to move as much configuration as possible from a workflow file to pyproject.toml.
Anyway, I just tried select = "*-macosx*arm64" and it works perfectly, thanks a lot for this !
I would still like to understand exactly why select = "*-macosx_*_x86_64*" doesn't, but feel free to close this !

Your select pattern has too many underscores, because you're not matching a wheel name, you're matching a build identifier.

It does make me think though, perhaps we could raise a warning/error for misconfiguration if an override select matches nothing, like we do for the build/skip options.

Awesome, so I guess I can drop one wildcard and use select = "*-macosx_arm64" instead of select = "*-macosx*arm64".
I like the idea of a warning (an error might be undesirable in some cases) in case of an unmatched override
