We use a link-layer specific function to obtain the MAC address of the Ethernet adapter, which uses different technques for Linux, BSD and Solaris. We should use a portable function to get the interface MAC address if one exists, but I've not found a way to do this yet.
This is a long-standing issue from the TODO file.
