I'm finding it a bit hit and miss whether the flag emojis show up in various browsers... it's a bit ugly the way they are replaced by the letter codes when missing.

They are unicode symbols, so should be rendered (but aren't) by all browser engines. Don't think there's much we can do about that but get rid of them. What do you think?
I had to look into the support for Unicode flag symbols because of something else, and it seems that some browsers do not support them on purpose. This is sad, but it does mean that using them on the web is unreliable, unfortunately. Or you keep telling people over and over to avoid certain browsers, which you do anyway, but it does not seem to help much.
