Are there plans for a Portable Text based rich text editor?

I'm working on a side project which requires a rich text editor. I've been trying all of the usual suspects but they're all so convoluted and don't have nice ways of working with images (being able to intercept and upload to my own server).

I've loved using Sanity's editor in the past and noticed a vague looking package called @sanity/portable-text-editor. Is this making the text editor available outside of a Studio context?

I'm wondering whether to hold out for this before tying myself in to the existing offerings.
