"The paper should be at most 6000 words including figures" - as far as I understand, this means the word counter is processing the raw markdown, which has lots of instructions not related to the text of the article. I believe it also processes LaTeX formulas. If so, this puts the authors in an uneven situation, when the publication requires lots of layout-specific commands, they are counted as text. Please inform me if I misinterpret this requirement.
Do notebooks count?
In any case, I think this is a very limiting constraint, and I propose to increase this number.
