Insertion Sort

Insertion Sort is a simple sorting algorithm that works the way we sort playing cards in our hands.

Complexity

Best Average Worst Memory Stable
$O(n)$ $O(n^2)$ $O(n^2)$ $O(1)$ Yes

Pseudo Code

procedure insertionSort( A : list of sortable items )
    n = length(A)
    for i = 1 to n-1 inclusive do
        /* if this pair is out of order */
        if A[i-1] > A[i] then
            /* swap them and remember something changed */
            swap( A[i-1], A[i] )
            swapped = true
        end if
    end for
end procedure

procedure insertionSortDesc( A : list of sortable items )
    n = length(A)
    for i = 1 to n-1 inclusive do
        /* if this pair is out of order */
        if A[i-1] < A[i] then
            /* swap them and remember something changed */
            swap( A[i-1], A[i] )
            swapped = true
        end if
    end for
end procedure
