once sourmash-bio/sourmash#3342 is merged, along with #471, I think we have a nice chance to consolidate down to one method of calculating gather stats in branchwater.

May involve sourmash refactoring per comments in sourmash-bio/sourmash#3342 and issue sourmash-bio/sourmash#3196.
