Desktop icons disappear on swapping workspaces

Steps to reproduce

1. Observe desktopfolder running and desktop icons present on workspace 1
2. swap to workspace 2
3. observe desktop icons missing
   ...

Expected result

desktop icons should remain available whichever workspace is selected

Actual result

desktopfolder process remains running but icons are missing

System Information

• OS: Ubuntu 20.04
• Desktop Folder version: 1.1.3

This issue seems to also be a case when using multiple displays. Icons/folders created on the external display are not visible on the notebooks internal display after the external display is plugged out.
