🐛: stalwart-cli doesn't import date information sometimes

What happened?

I'm currently in the process of migrating from postfix+dovecot to stalwart, and used the stalwart cli to import my emails from maildir - however, emails that originally didn't have a date header (from what i understand) just get served as is; making them always appear at the top in your mail client, as if they JUST arrived everytime you sync. happens on both thunderbird desktop and mobile (android).

would it be possible to use the filesystem last modified date to "fix"/re-add the date header to emails without it?

How can we reproduce the problem?

I can reproduce the problem by doing the following steps:

• set up a postfix+dovecot mail server (hell)
• set up mail client for a mailbox on that server
• close mail client
• send an email to that mailbox that doesn't have a Date header
• wait 2-3 minutes
• open mail client
• notice that the mail has the correct timestamp from arrival
• import that mailbox to stalwart using stalwart-cli's import messages feature (maildir)
• set up mail client for that stalwart instance
• notice how the email shows up as if it just arrived, and has the timestamp of the first sync of the mail client

note: thunderbird desktop loads your whole inbox at once, making this very annoying, thunderbird mobile doesn't (but due to some other issue, some emails dont show up at all unless you manually load the entire inbox, as they're not really chronologically sorted. this happens to emails with Date header too)

The CLI tool obtains the Received date from the file, this is how the Maildir format stored the received time.

good to know, ill look into that. is there any way to prevent stalwart from having no date info at all though? as im pretty sure the issue with emails that didnt have date information associated with them originally always showing up as if they just arrived whenever you sync your mail client isn't intentional

It's not possible to manually specify a default received date in the CLI tool. You might try synchronizing the mailbox using imapsync instead, they might have an option for that.

If you use imapsync instead, there’s an option to fix that by adding missing headers…

# imapsync --addheader --syncduplicates --host1 old.server.tld --user1 userToBeSynced --password1 password1! --host2 new.server.tld --user2 userToBeSynced --password2 password2!

Of course, this requires the imapsync package to be installed…
