PUTBASIC incorrectly converted ASC("£")

I found that putbasic has incorrectly converted ASC("£")

OMG I am so sorry this is not a beebasm issue
Its a source code issue, I just opened my source code file in GHex and I see 22 c2 a3 22 ".." where the "£" is in the source code
Its a file encoding issue at the source

It is confusing. Here's what each character code means in different situations:

So the file on the PC has stored the pound sign as the UTF-8 encoding. That would ordinarily be the default for Linux, whereas on Windows I think it would more normally be Windows-1252 or UTF-16, though I think you can include a BOM to mark a UTF-8 file.

I would say it is the job of a tool like BeebAsm to translate from the character encoding of the host to the character encoding of the guest.
