Instructions how to install NUMPY and PANDAS on Termux

These instructions confirmed to work with Python 3.11 from official Termux repositories and tested on fresh Termux installation (aarch64, Android 14).

yes | pkg upgrade

pkg install python build-essential cmake ninja libopenblas libandroid-execinfo patchelf binutils-is-llvm

pip3 install setuptools wheel packaging pyproject_metadata cython meson-python versioneer

MATHLIB=m LDFLAGS="-lpython3.11" pip3 install --no-build-isolation --no-cache-dir numpy

LDFLAGS="-lpython3.11" pip3 install --no-build-isolation --no-cache-dir pandas

Resulting versions are Numpy 1.26.3 and Pandas 2.2.0 as of Feb 1, 2024.

Stop reporting pandas and numpy installation issues again and again and don't follow old instructions.

Instructions at https://wiki.termux.com/wiki/Python are obsolete (last update in Oct, 2022). If you want to keep them up-to-date, please contribute. Termux maintainers will not check installability of every single Python module and update setup commands.

Common tips when using pip in Termux:

• Pass --no-build-isolation if module requires cmake, ninja, patchelf or something like during build time.
• Pass --no-cache-dir to prevent reusing modules from cache. Useful in case you used wrong commands previously.
• Set variable LDFLAGS="-lpython3.11" to force link native extensions with Python 3.11 library (replace 3.11 with actual Python version). Needed at least for Numpy but other modules could require it as well.
• (!!!) Do not ever try to pip install --upgrade pip. Termux uses a patched variant of Pip, that's why. A lot of seemingly stable & standard stuff has to be patched in order to work properly in Termux.

Because you'll get an original pip which is not suitable and doesn't contain runtime fixes to work properly in Termux.

You don't need to update it either. Termux will ship a newer version when required and users just need to run pkg upgrade.

If some module errored during pip install and suggested to upgrade pip, then ignore such messages. They are nothing more than just quick maintenance step to ensure environment sanity.

99.9% of pip errors inside Termux happen because of environment differences and missing dependencies. The post shows clearly steps to mitigate related issues for Numpy and Pandas. Similar steps could be applicable for other packages.

How to update Numpy?

Reinstall newer version with MATHLIB=m LDFLAGS="-lpython3.11" pip3 install --no-build-isolation --no-cache-dir numpy

You still have to use additional variables and flags. No way to drop them.

What about changing the LDFLAGS to LDFLAGS="-lm -lcompiler_rt -lpython3.11" so as to ensure future numpy imports?

As far I know, -lm -lcompiler_rt are no longer needed. These flags were required a while ago.
