I was looking to try out MQTT Explorer today and downloaded the Linux AppImage. I run an application firewall called opensnitch and I immediately got notified that MQTT Explorer tried to connect to these sites when I first open the program:
redirector.gvt1.com
github.com
api.github.com
I'm surprised I was not presented with a privacy policy before the connection attempts were made, describing what these are used for, how these websites collect my information. I also would expect the ability to opt out.
I'm not a lawyer. but I believe this is a GDPR violation (I'm an EU citizen).
Aside from the law it is also a violation of the user's trust: I do not expect programs to make random requests to random websites. MQTT is not a general purpose browser, nor a github client, and as such has no business making connections to those without first explaining itself and asking for consent.
EDIT: Upon closing the program (which seemed to work perfectly fine even when blocked from connecting to the above mentioned websites), the bundled chrome crasphad handler from electron tried to connect to app-telemetry.t7n.de. This too I don't see an option to turn off.
The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:
