auth: takes a few tries to establish a channel

You usually get failed to PUT channel errors, but if you hit Cmd+R two or three times it establishes it.

Might need exponential backoff — could be inadvertently solved by #7? Regardless, it shouldn't take a few tries to connect to a ship, so need to assess what causes the PUT to fail.

Might be worth trying to load the api before mounting the component with an API + auth loader, perhaps authloader as a whole can instantiate the api session.
