Mark as "not-spam"

I got my first spam!

Wait, no - that's important. How do I mark it as "not-spam"? I couldn't figure it out until later I saw some doc, and it's very unintuitive. I needed to:

• click the to/from part of the email to expand it
• click the email address of the sender in the email
• click "Add Spam Rule"
• choose "not spam" at the bottom
• click "OK"

What should happen instead?

If I'm viewing an email that's in the spam folder there should be a "not spam" button I can click. Done.

Hi, depends on what you want to achieve! Do you want to mark one mail as not spam? Then moving it out of spam would already achieve it.
If you want to create a spam rule then you have to either click on sender and add a spam rule or go to settings

So when I have an email in Spam and I move it to my Inbox for example, is that automatically feeding back into your spam filters to improve them? (e.g., "you got this wrong, please take this into consideration") Or is that not how your spam filters are updated? (That's the mental model I have of GMail when I click "not spam" - maybe I'm wrong!)

Ah - I see. I'm conflating two concepts. This part makes sense - override the spam filter in the way I'm specifying.

Hi, @asmaloney, yes moving the mail out of Spam folder marks it as a false positive to improve the spam filter.

@charlag uhm, interesting... I have done this multiple times from a newsletter I am subscribed to that I want to receive, yet the last 2 or 3 months it has gone directly to spam no matter how many times I have moved them out of the spam folder to my inbox. Today I found out about having to click on a senders email to be able to create a spam rule.

Independently of that, I agree that the process of clicking the email address to create a spam rule or moving the email to out of spam folder to achieve the same is highly un-intuitive. Having used mainstream email clients, users are already used to having a dedicated button, either individually for each email message, or bulk action. I do not think the issue is if the feature is available or not, it is about UX and make things easier for users coming from other services.
