I don't have time to dig in I'm afraid, but I was running into an issue with jstree crashing my browser and freezing. I realized I was duplicating my ids on subsequent create_node, and once fixed, this stopped. I think it was the root cause.

jsTree has never supported duplicate IDs - I think it is documented in a few places.
