Assertion `parent->IsFolder()' failed

Grive was working without issue until recently. Went to sync and got error message:

Reading local directories
Reading remote server file list
grive: /build/grive2-eoRXVg/grive2-0.5.1/libgrive/src/base/State.cc:238: bool gr::State::Update(const gr::Entry&): Assertion `parent->IsFolder()' failed.
Aborted (core dumped)

Was able to sync without issue until on or about June 1st. Attempted autoremove of all grive items. Scanned through computer removed grive related files. De-authorized from google account. Restarted computer, reinstalled, still same message.

Help would be appreciated.

Basically, this error is saying that some file in your Google Drive is owned by something that's not a folder, which should never be the case. Files should only have folders as owners.

Thank you for the insight. I have seen this error on multiple forums asking for a fix for grive. As stated before, it only started recently for me, likely after a security update for Ubuntu on June 1st or 2nd. Should I change the permissions for all my local google drive files?

I'm not sure about this but my guess is that the problem is on the server side (Google), not the client side (your computer). It's saying that the file exists on the server, but is not located anywhere.
A short and dirty fix that might work would be to just remove that one assert line and recompile

After some Googling, I think what you might have is called an orphaned file. See here for more info: https://support.google.com/a/answer/6008339?hl=en
Edit: Nevermind this doesn't make sense. Orphaned files return an empty list of parents, which wouldn't cause the error you're getting

I've just added an error message for your case. Please try the version from master branch and post the messsage here

....that was an experience.
Had to get dependencies as shown in your instructions and compile. Had to remove the old grive install new master and re- grive -a.

Then it gave me good information about the file causing that problem, and also continued to sync the rest of the files, of which it would not do before.

To elaborate more. This problem file is one that I renamed, and moved to a different folder on my local drive.
