Trailheads are more common than guide posts for signposting in North America. They should be shown in the same way as guide posts (maybe even a zoom level or two earlier as they are much more sparse).

In Nederland lots of "official" (named and maintained) trailheads are present, and more are being rolled out. They consist of a small designated rounded or hexagonal area having a pole, flag, stone or key about 4m high, some seats or benches, an information board and a map. In the immediate vicinity there is parking space, often toilets, horeca, and always one or more guideposts and/or gates into e.g. a nature reserve. Unlike the trailheads in North America, the Dutch trailheads are multimodal: routes for hiking, biking, canooing, horseriding start or pass along these places.

The trailheads are currently (2018 nov) being added to OSM as nodes tagged highway=trailhead, name=, operator=, information=board, and some optional tags: url, wikipedia, website.
When al are present, we will add modality tags: hiking=yes, bicycle=yes, canoo=yes, ... (have to check the wiki for exact values)

We would very much like to see those rendered on the WMT-maps. As I am notoriously bad with all kinds of pictures. I cannot present a ready-to-use icon. Suggestion: the guidepost icon with a small oval(ish) place underneath would be a good start, I think. The effect would be close to the icon for Places in the WMT information sidebar, when I search for a place e.g. "Middelharnis" in Nederland.

I will try to get someone to design something but the Dutch OSM community is not very designerish.

What about this one? It shows information board, parking, guidepost hands for directions and nature in the middle.

@AllroadsNL This will not work on a map. The symbol would have to be about the size of the guideposts.

@pelderson The svg in your zip file does not work for me.

@lonvia Don't know what went wrong. Here's the png, I gues you will want something smaller...

Something with less detail mainly. Like the guideposts it would be used small size on the map and larger size in the details view. So, just the board without the content would technically work but, of course, it wouldn't express the same meaning either. I like the direction both your suggestions are going, we just need to find a way to simplify them.

Do we have to provide more icon options or will one of these do?

What about this one? (Needs some additional styling of course)

I'm sorry I can't be of use in implementing these things.
