Because of frequent network problems I would like to download videos in advance before viewing. I think this should be possible by specifying ffmpeg as player but have no idea what arguments to pass to it, do you have an example?

I haven't do it for a while, but mpv can store the stream using --stream-dump option. If you run televize with --player "mpv --stream-dump /tmp/dump" you should be able to play the video afterwards.
The function basically depends on the program used as a --player.
